Singer-songwriter Jade Bird makes good use of time in Austin

Austin360 On The Record is a weekly roundup of new, recent and upcoming releases by local and Austin-associated recording artists. Jade Bird, “Different Kinds of Light” (Glassnote). A winner of South by Southwest’s prestigious Grulke Prize in 2018, English singer-songwriter Bird was just 21 when she released her full-length in 2019. The self-titled record quickly drew attention with its blend of sharp singer-songwriter craft and and radiant indie-pop energy. She raises the stakes with this 15-song set, which was completed before her relocation to Austin in late 2020.

Jade Bird: ‘If we can’t get a festival bill right, how can we do something about men abusing women?’

An enforced fortnight of quarantine in a Mexico City hotel room with her partner, a guitar and a notepad proved to be the perfect creative environment for Jade Bird to write her eclectic, Britpop-inspired second album, Different Kinds of Light. Heading to Nashville via Mexico thanks to US-UK travel restrictions, she knew the self-isolation was necessary to avoid the record being compromised.

Jade Bird – ‘Different Kinds Of Light’ review: eclectic follow-up stays true to her roots

When Jade Bird began to garner attention back in 2017, she was quickly categorised as a country-folk singer; many of the Northumberland-born star’s songs were acoustic guitar ballads against Americana-tinged vocals – her first EP was aptly named ‘Something American’. But despite Bird embracing her Southern influences, she wants people to know there’s more to her as a musician. “I always felt like people were really trying to box me into a genre and a style,” she told NME in her recent digital cover story.

Jade Bird: “There are so many preconceptions with me – but I am a fan of music first”

Whatever people say Jade Bird is, that’s what she’s not. Literally setting fire to an acoustic guitar and a cowboy hat – as she gleefully did during the photoshoot for her first-ever NME cover story – might seem a touch extreme, but as someone who’s been trying to shake off the folksy singer-songwriter stereotypes that have dogged her since the release of her debut EP, 2017’s ‘Something American’, she’s nothing if not committed.
