Marlins' Jacob Stallings: Goes yard in Marlins debut

Stallings went 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI in Friday's 6-5 extra-inning loss to the Giants. The Marlins' new starting catcher made an immediate impact in his debut for the team, taking Dominic Leone deep in the seventh inning for a two-run shot to get Miami on the board before bringing home Miguel Rojas with a single in the ninth as part of a three-run rally. Stallings hit a career-high eight homers in 112 games last season for the Pirates, so power hasn't been a big part of his game to date, but the 32-year-old wouldn't be the first backstop to grow as a hitter later in their career if he does keep slugging.

Marlins' Jacob Stallings: Gearing up for Opening Day

Stallings went 1-for-3 with an RBI in Sunday's Grapefruit League game against the Mets. The veteran catcher is hitting a lackluster .235 (4-for-17) this spring, but Stallings' spot at the top of the Marlins' depth chart isn't in jeopardy. The 32-year-old's defense will keep him behind the plate most days, and he did post a career-high eight homers and 53 RBI last year for the Pirates before an offseason trade.

Because they almost let the Sox pull it off, right from under their noses, and were saved at the buzzer by a bit of Derek Jeter-led Miami Marlins ingenuity. Woof.

Red Sox rumors: Boston made offer, got close to acquiring Gold Glove catcher Jacob Stallings before Pirates dealt him to Marlins (report)

The Red Sox already have two capable catchers in Christian Vázquez and Kevin Plawecki, but they were reportedly looking to make an addition at the position earlier this week. According to Craig Mish and Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald, the Red Sox made an offer to the Pirates for catcher Jacob Stallings and “at one point thought” they had agreed to a deal for him. That never materialized and Pittsburgh ended up shipping Stallings to the Marlins for pitchers Zach Thompson and Kyle Nicolas as well as outfielder Connor Scott on Monday.
