Duquesne Freshman G Jackie Johnson Enters Transfer Portal

On Monday, Duquesne guard Jackie Johnson III entered the transfer portal after playing one season for the Dukes. Johnson showcased extensive three-point range and quickness in his lone year with the program. He and Primo Spears came into the same recruiting class for head coach Keith Dambrot, but it now looks as though the two will not finish their career at Duquesne together with Johnson departing.

The rebuilding effort for Duquesne Basketball is starting to see some positive strides, led by the freshmen duo of Primo Spears and Jackie Johnson III. Duquesne Basketball has seen a ton of roster turnover over the past couple of years, especially in the backcourt. Last year’s starters were point guard Sincere Carry and off-guard Tavian Dunn-Martin, two of the better guards in the Atlantic 10 Conference. But between Carry leaving mid-way and Dunn-Martin transferring last offseason, the Dukes had to start all over.

Duquesne Guard Jackie Johnson Named A-10 Rookie of the Week

The combination of freshman Jackie Johnson and Primo Spears were key figures in Duquesne’s win at UMass and one of those players is getting some conference recognition. Following his 27-point performance on Saturday, Johnson was named the A-10 Rookie of the Week. The 5’11” guard finished the game against the Minutemen with a game-high 27 points, which was his second 27-point game of the season. A majority of Johnson’s production came in the second half, when he scored 16 points, including a crucial basketball with :10 seconds left that extended Duquesne’s lead back to 5 points.
