Book review: Farmers or Hunter-gatherers? The Dark Emu Debate rigorously critiques Bruce Pascoe's argument

Eminent Australian anthropologist Peter Sutton and respected field archaeologist Keryn Walshe have co-authored a meticulously researched new book, Farmers or Hunter-gatherers? The Dark Emu Debate. It’s set to become the definitive critique of Bruce Pascoe’s Dark Emu: Black Seeds — Agriculture or Accident? First published in 2014, Pascoe’s Dark Emu has spawned numerous derivatives. Pascoe contends that in pre-contact times, Australian Aboriginal people weren’t “mere” hunter-gatherers, but agriculturalists. Descriptors like “simple” or “mere” are anathema to people like me who’ve lived long-term with hunter-gatherers. For many Australians, Pascoe’s book is a “must-read”, speaking truth to power. For such readers, Dark Emu seems...

Cyrus Pattinson Wipes Out Markov in Pro Debut: Dacres, Hunter, Laws Win

Former quality GB amateur Cyrus Pattinson made easy work of Yoncho Markov in his professional debut on the Ritson-Ponce undercard in Newcastle. Pattinson was unfortunate at being at the same weight at Pat McCormack in the Great Britain squad and was simply levels above the Bulgarian, dropping him twice in the second round – the first time from a combination to body and head, the second from a body shot – before referee Victor Loughlin waved it off at 1:50 of the second round. The result was announced as a count out, although Markov actually made it to his feet at eight. The fight was scheduled for six at super-welterweight.

Deer Hunter’s Almanac – JUNE

This post was originally published mid-June in 2017. ‘Deer Hunter’s Almanac’ was created by Craig Dougherty with help from Jason Ashe for the Hunting Page. Two hundred days before June 1 put us in the peak of last year’s rut, (mid- November). Roughly 80% of this year’s fawns on the ground right now, the rest will probably be dropped in two weeks. All of this year’s fawns will be born by the fourth of July (or almost all). This is the time of replenishment, the time when the deer herds are made whole once more, fawns bring smiles of well-being and satisfaction, the hunter is transformed to the protector. All the fawns won’t make it into hunting season but the majority of them will, deer numbers are at a high for the year, they will decline from this point on.

REVIEW: ‘Ham Helsing: Vampire Hunter’ – Facing Danger With Friends

Ham Helsing: Vampire Hunter is a children’s adventure graphic novel published by Random House Children’s Books and is written and illustrated by Rich Moyer. The Helsing name has long been synonymous with the pursuit of vampire hunting. A long linage of reckless, foolhardy adventurers litters the family tree, making the Helsing name one of the most prominent names in the art. Until recently, this tradition was carried on by Chad Helsing. But, with his recent death, the duty falls onto his younger brother Ham. Not nearly as enthusiastic about the pursuit, he nonetheless answers a besieged town’s cry for help.

Atlanta's Hunter to miss the remainder of the season

ATLANTA — Atlanta Hawks forward De’Andre Hunter will miss the rest of the season; the team announced on Thursday. Prior to Game 1 against Philadelphia, forward De’Andre Hunter began experiencing some mild swelling in his right knee. Head Team Physician Dr. Kenneth Mautner and Head Orthopaedist Dr. Kyle Hammond examined Hunter and suggested an MRI. The initial review revealed a new small tear of the lateral meniscus. Films from the MRI were sent to Dr. Neal ElAttrache of Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic in Los Angeles for a second opinion, who earlier today confirmed the tear and recommended surgery. Hunter is scheduled to travel to Los Angeles this weekend and undergo surgery to the lateral meniscus on Tuesday with Dr. ElAttrache. He will miss the remainder of the postseason and future updates will be provided as appropriate.
