Composer to Watch: Hildur Guðnadóttir of “Joker” and “Chernobyl”

It may seem counterintuitive for an Oscar winner to be under the radar but, like many composers not named John or Hans, Hildur Guðnadóttir is not yet a household name. Film is, in many ways, still thought of primarily as a visual medium, but that understanding leaves out one of the great assets that cinema has over other visual arts: the element of sound. So many films use their scores and soundscapes to influence the audience’s emotional response and to tell the story of feeling.

The Society of Composers & Lyricists have announced the full list of SCL AWARDS’ nominees, to be presented the 3rd Annual SCL AWARDS for score and songs in visual media on February 1st at the Skirball Cultural Center (Covid permitting). Awards are presented in seven competitive categories: Outstanding Original Score for a Studio Film, Outstanding Original Score for an Independent Film, Outstanding Original Score for a Television Production, Outstanding Original Song for a Dramatic or Documentary Visual Media Production, Outstanding Original Song for a Comedy or Musical Visual Media Production, Outstanding Original Score for Interactive Media, and the David Raksin Award for Emerging Talent.

Grammy-winning composers Hildur Gudnadóttir and Sam Slater score new Battlefield video game

The latest Battlefield video game, Battlefield 2042, features music by acclaimed composers Hildur Gudnadóttir and Sam Slater, Billboard reported. Due October 22nd, Battlefield 2042 is a new instalment of Electronic Arts and DICE's long-running Battlefield series. A combination of music and sound design, the upcoming score has been a year in the making. It's the first video game project for Berlin-based Gudnadóttir and Slater, who each won two Grammy Awards for their work on the 2019 film Joker and the HBO series Chernobyl.
