San Diego Rep’s latest Hershey Felder film about the premiere of Verdi’s ‘La Traviata’

Giuseppe Verdi’s “La traviata” has been recognized as the most-performed opera in the world. Most fans know it’s the story of Violetta, a consumptive courtesan (a kept mistress for wealthy men) who sacrifices everything for her last, and impetuous, young lover, Alfredo. What they may not know is that the Italian opera composer may have had his own mistress during his 50-year marriage to Giuseppina Strepponi.

Hershey Felder Presents- Live From Florence- The Great American Songbook

During all the years that Hershey Felder did his special one man shows, he found times to add or to do instead, a “great American Songbook” special. Often, he would just do some of the greatest Broadway musical highlights, often filling in with stories of each number or the creation of them. On some special nights, audience members ( and sometimes friends) would join along with Felder. I count myself as both, an audience member and over the years, a friend. I was on one of the New Year’s Eve songbook nights, on stage doing Tevye from “Fiddler on the Roof” ( “If I was a Rich man”), and another time, did a duet with Felder of “Do You Love Me?” ( with him doing the Golda part)

Hershey Felder Presents” Anna & Sergei”

Highly recommended ***** While most of the world was “locked in” during Covid, our good friend Hershey Felder was creating great films…stories of musicians Biographies that are amazingly detailed! Sheer delight to watch on any screen. While I truly enjoy watching him create his art “on stage” LIVE- I appreciate what he has done with his special series , Hershey Felder Presents-Live From Florence. Felder writes, directs and stars in these bios about composers and within each tale, we get to see and hear his touch on The Stineway.

Hershey Felder Portrays the Dying Composer Rachmaninoff in ‘Nicholas, Anna & Sergei’

The great Russian composer and virtuoso pianist Sergei Vasilyevich Rachmaninoff reportedly once proclaimed: “I am 85% music, 15% man.”. If that quote is accurate, as noted in Hershey Felder’s latest biopic, “Nicholas, Anna & Sergei,” then Felder — the multi-talented, multi-lingual, multi-hyphenate (writer-actor-director-producer-piano performer) — has pretty much stuck to those proportions in recounting the composer’s life.

Bay Area arts: Hershey Felder as ‘Rachmaninoff’; Silicon Valley Open Studios

Here are some events this weekend Bay Area arts fans should know about. There is a great deal we know about Sergei Rachmaninoff, the Russian composer and pianist of the late Romantic period. But there is one chapter, late in the composer’s life, when he was in poor health and settled in Southern California, about which little is known. And that’s where Hershey Felder’s newest stage production begins.

TR Robertson — The San Diego Repertory Theatre has once again hit a theatrical home run with the latest online presentation of the incomparable Hershey Felder and a masterful look into the life of another great composer from the past, this the life of Giacomo Antonio Domenico Michele Secondo Maria Puccini. SD Rep and Felder have presented several performances centered on great composers from history, live streaming now since the onset of COVID. Felder lives in Italy and the recent performances have come from Florence, this time also using Puccini’s original birth home in Lucca, Italy. Puccini has been called “the greatest composer of Italian opera after Verdi”.

Hershey Felder Presents- Live From Florence “Puccini”

Highly Recommended ***** Many of my readers ( and listeners on wcpt 820 am) know that Hershey Felder is a performer that I find to be incredible and a “Genius”. If you have watched him do any of his one-man-shows ( biographies of artists where he becomes the artists- Gershwin, Bernstein, Chopin etc), you will be amazed at what he is doing from Florence Italy. He first did a show that detailed the man, Sholom Aleichem and how the Fiddler stories became the “Fiddler” play . This production is far from what we are used to see him doing. On the local stage he is the only person. He brings the story to life AS the person.
