PHILIPPI, W.Va. — As a four-time defending Class AA state champion, Herbert Hoover is familiar with playing games where plenty is at stake this time of season. On the other hand, Philip Barbour — the Huskies’ opponent in this week’s Region II series — has proved it more than belongs at this stage throughout a storied season, yet it marks the first appearance for the Colts’ softball program in a regional.

Herbert Hoover, the 31st president of the United States, was born in West Branch, Iowa, grew up in Oregon, and graduated from Stanford University in 1895. Shortly after World War I broke out, he became the head of the Commission for Relief in Belgium, an international relief organization that provided food to Belgium during the time it was occupied.

1929: President Herbert Hoover establishes the National Commission on Law Observance and Enforcement

The NCLOE or “Wickersham Commission” was designed to investigate crime related to prohibition, in addition to policing tactics. Between 1931 and 1932, the commission published the findings of its investigation in 14 volumes, one of which was titled “Report on Lawlessness in Law Enforcement” and said that police frequently used torture methods to enforce the law. Byrd baseball junior, who went 3 for 4 with two runs and an RBI as the Flying Eagles beat Herbert Hoover 12-2 in six innings Saturday, found the right mix to turn popouts into line drives. All three of his hits were doubles as he led RCB past the visiting Huskies.
