Heather Small looks back: ‘James was born in March – by November he was with me on tour’

One of the most instantly recognisable voices of the 90s, singer Heather Small was born in west London in 1965. A chance meeting with Hacienda DJ Mike Pickering led to the formation of M People, who went on to sell more than 10m records of uplifting dance pop. After the birth of her son, James, with rugby player and coach Shaun Edwards, she released a solo album, Proud. James is now the Labour party candidate for Bayswater ward in Westminster, and is on Labour’s Future Candidates Programme. Heather’s solo tour begins on 17 March.

Heather Small: 'I got held by Russian immigration and carried out of a club in Ibiza'

I went for the 2019 Year of Return when they invited the diaspora to come home. I’d never been to west Africa – my family came from Barbados, because of enslavement. This trip was eye-opening because I saw a link between the people of the Caribbean and west Africa: my grandmother used to carry crates of drinks on her head, and in Ghana I saw people doing the same. In Barbados we have cou-cou – which is cornmeal presented in a dome. In Ghana it’s in a ball shape. I don’t like Ghana’s stance on LGBTQ+ rights, but being back where we began resonated deeply. I learnt the word akwaaba, which means welcome.
