Cubs' Greg Deichmann: Designated for assignment

Deichmann was designated for assignment by the Cubs on Saturday, Sahadev Sharma of The Athletic reports. The move clears space on the 40-man roster for the Cubs to add Locke St. John. Deichmann has gotten off to a slow start for Triple-A Iowa this season, hitting .207 with a 44.8 percent strikeout rate through eight games.

Cubs' Greg Deichmann: Sent to Triple-A

Deichmann was optioned to Triple-A Iowa on Friday. Deichmann was fighting for a bench spot at best and won't win one to open the year. He grabbed just four hits while striking out 14 times in 31 plate appearances in his brief debut last season but posted a .274/.388/.435 line at the Triple-A level.

Cubs' Greg Deichmann: Could earn playing time

Deichmann could see some playing time this season as a left-handed bench option in the outfield, Sahadev Sharma of The Athletic reports. Deichmann made his MLB debut last season, posting a .133/.161/.133 line across 14 games. The 26-year-old might not carve out a huge role with the Cubs, but with Ian Happ (elbow) recovering from February surgery, there's at least a potential path to some playing time in the early going.

Cubs 40-man roster coin-flips: Greg Deichmann

This is the last in a series on Cubs 40-man roster coin flips. You can read all of the articles in this StoryStream. While Greg Deichmann’s wasn’t intended to be the last of the series, he ends up being so, shortly after Andrew Chafin declared himself a free agent. In other words, the Cubs have the futures of two prospects for a partial season of a reliever that might, conceivably, return to Wrigley — how very Jason Hammel. While Deichmann didn’t club MLB pitching his first time through, he had a look, and has things to work on, however long his off-season is. Here is my 40-man coin-flip on Deichmann.
