JT Video Premiere: “Bemba Colorá” by Gonzalo Rubalcaba & Aymée Nuviola

Although pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba and vocalist Aymée Nuviola have been friends since childhood, they had never worked together on a musical project until 2019. That August, the two Grammy winners shared the stage for a six-night engagement at the Blue Note Tokyo. Those shows were recorded, and selections from them saw the light of day on an album, Viento y Tiempo – Live at Blue Note Tokyo, released last May by Top Stop Music and currently in the running for a(nother) Grammy, for Best Latin Jazz Album.

Jazz Pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba on 'Viento Y Tiempo' & How Afro-Cuban Culture Has Inspired His Music

After some sleuthing, his parents found a man who lived in a little town outside of Havana who built instruments. "Back then, we didn't have a store you could just drive to and buy instruments," the now 57-year-old Grammy-winning multi-instrumentalist tells Billboard. "But my family was very good at not letting us children become aware of our limitations. Instead they made us understand the importance of developing our skills in order to become a professional musician or whatever we wanted to be."
