New York Yankees vs. Baltimore Orioles: Gerrit Cole vs. Jordan Lyles

The Yankees are coming off just their second series loss of the season, having dropped both games in Sunday’s doubleheader with the White Sox. It wasn’t a great weekend for the club, but they’re right back at it tonight, taking on a reasonably hot Orioles team for what feels like the 25th time this season.

Yankees' Gerrit Cole: Yields five runs in loss

Cole (4-1) allowed five runs on seven hits over eight innings Monday, striking out 11 and taking a loss against Baltimore. Cole turned in an ugly final line but was mostly his usual self outside of Baltimore's four-run third inning headlined by Austin Hays' two-run single. He later coughed up a solo shot to Ramon Urias in the sixth. While his ERA jumped from 2.81 to 3.31 Monday, Cole improved his season K:BB to an impressive 62:12 through 51.2 frames, including a 35:2 K:BB over his last four starts. The 31-year-old is projected to start in Tampa Bay this weekend.

Red-hot Yankees clip Orioles thanks to Gerrit Cole, first-inning outburst

BALTIMORE — The Yankees were knocked a year ago for not beating bad teams like the Orioles enough. Evidently, they took that message to heart, as they are feasting on subpar opponents this season. They’ve now won four games in a row and nine of 10 overall after making a three-run first inning stand up for a 3-2 victory over the Orioles on Wednesday night. Gerrit Cole was the latest starter to pitch well, as the right-hander delivered his fourth consecutive solid outing, limiting the Orioles to two runs in seven innings at Camden Yards. But it was Clay Holmes who really stood out,...

Yankees vs. Orioles prediction and odds for Wednesday May 18: Baltimore live for upset vs. Gerrit Cole

Yankees: -1.5 (-150) Total: 7.5 (Over -115/Under -105) Cole continues to be priced as a premiere ace, but he simply hasn't been this season. He is posting a strikeout to walk rate of 3.83, down from 5.53 and 5.93 in his two prior seasons with the Yanks. While he still has a shiny ERA of 2.95, his FIP (Fielding Independent Pitching) of 3.41hints that he is getting bailed out in the field.

Yankees' Gerrit Cole: Notches fourth victory

Cole (4-0) earned the win over Baltimore on Wednesday, pitching seven innings and allowing two runs on six hits while striking out five batters. Cole demonstrated excellent control throughout the contest, throwing 70 of 97 pitches for strikes and yielding no walks for the first time this season. He didn't fan any batters through the first three innings, struck out five straight between the fourth and fifth frames, then went the rest of his outing without another punchout. The right-hander had a 6.35 ERA through his first three outings this season but has brought that number all the way down to 2.89 with five straight quality starts. His next start is lined up to be a rematch against the Orioles -- this time in New York -- early next week.

New York Yankees @ Chicago White Sox: Gerrit Cole vs. Vince Velasquez

What a way to start a four-game series! Last night felt like the closest we’ve come to witnessing the firepower of the fully armed and operational battle station that is the Yankees offense. They received contributions from practically every spot in the lineup, dropping two touchdowns on a night when arguably the best pitcher of the series — Dylan Cease — struck out 11 in 4 innings and the bullpen blew a three-run lead. Winning the most perilous game of the series (from a starting pitching standpoint) in such an emphatic fashion can only add to their confidence. Let’s see if they can carry that confidence over to tonight’s contest.

Yankees’ Gerrit Cole laments final pitch despite another strong outing

Gerrit Cole entered the press conference room at Yankee Stadium on Sunday still grumbling about his 114th and final pitch of the day. The 3-2 pitch landed in the right-field seats off the bat of Kole Calhoun, but even if it was “bad damage,” as Cole described it, it was the only damage he gave up all afternoon. The seventh-inning solo home run that tied the game snapped Cole’s scoreless streak at 18 ²/₃ innings, but otherwise the Yankees ace turned in a third straight strong start in a 2-1 win over the Rangers in Game 1 of a doubleheader. “I just don’t...
