LETTER: George McGovern and supply and demand

I enjoyed your July 21 editorial, “George McGovern’s lesson for a foundering president.” I am a former adjunct faculty member in economics at UNLV. The course I taught was Principles of Macroeconomics, your basic Econ 101. For most of my students, it was their first exposure to the field of economics. The subject is not widely taught in Nevada’s public school systems.

Allen: Remembering George McGovern

As the director of the McGovern Center at Dakota Wesleyan University, one of my responsibilities is to re-focus and revitalize the memory of Sen. George McGovern. This is my joy and privilege. Sen. McGovern was born 100 years ago this summer (July 19, 1922). He won the Democratic presidential primary 50 years ago in July of 1972. This October, 10 years will have transpired since his passing. This 100/50/10 pattern point to 2022 as an appropriate time to reflect upon McGovern’s life and legacy.

Viewpoints: How America chooses its presidents: Remembering George McGovern, the changes he wrought and the need for new thinking

Fifty years ago this month, George McGovern was a highly skilled government official. By 1972, he’d already served as congressman, diplomat – as head of America’s Food for Peace program – and strong, moral voice in the U.S. Senate. That spring, his goal was to utilize his experience to make himself president of the United States.

Readers Write: Late Sen. George McGovern ahead of his time

This past Oct. 21st marked the tenth anniversary of the passing of 1972 losing Democratic Party Presidential candidate South Dakota Sen. George McGovern, who was ahead of his time in his race against Republican President Richard Nixon. McGovern’s platform included ending the Vietnam War. It also called for spending the billions wasted on the war to rebuild America, along with saving lives by bringing the troops home.
