CHAPEL HILL, N.C. --- When Gene Chizik and Charlton Warren were hired as the associate head coach for defense and co-defensive coordinator/defensive backs coach, respectively, former North Carolina players were ecstatic. Ryan Switzer and Mitch Trubisky were two of the first to reach out to Chizik and congratulate him, and they didn’t even play on the same side of the ball as him.

This was the first spring practice for new defensive coordinator Gene Chizik and new co-defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach Charlton Warren. There were eight new early enrollee freshmen and two new transfers in offensive lineman Corey Gaynor and edge rusher/jack Noah Taylor.
