Sox put Andrew Vaughn on COVID IL, bring up Gavin Sheets

Andrew Vaughn is on the injured list, but the Chicago White Sox are hopeful he won’t be there long. The team placed its rookie left fielder on the IL before Thursday’s game, following the league’s COVID-19 protocols. General manager Rick Hahn said in the announcement that the White Sox are hoping Vaughn won’t stay there long, a situation that could wind up mirroring those of Dylan Cease and Luis Robert, who went to the injured list for similar reasons earlier this season and returned within a couple days.

Chicago White Sox: It is time to call up Gavin Sheets from AAA

The Chicago White Sox has a lot of good young talent throughout the organization. We have seen some big-time prospects come up through the minors and reach the majors at different speeds. Well, some injuries have left room for a few experiments. One of those experiments has been Jake Lamb. He joined Spring Training late and made the team. However, that experiment is failing so they need to cut bait. One person who could replace him is Gavin Sheets.

White Sox's Gavin Sheets: Adds outfield to resume

Sheets worked as an outfielder during instructional league in Arizona last fall, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports. Sheets, a left-handed-hitting first baseman, decided to add outfield to his resume after being left off the White Sox's alternate training camp during the 2020 season. He became motivated by the team's decision to work on his overall game. He shed 15 pounds and learned the nuances of outfield play, getting assistance from his father, Larry, who played outfield during an eight-year career in the majors. Sheets, who last played for Doulbe-A Birmingham in 2019, is expected to be assigned to Triple-A Charlotte.
