Gary Goodman turns a page on the rare book trade

This interview posted above is from SDPB's daily public-affairs show, In the Moment, hosted by Lori Walsh. Before the digital age, if you wanted to find a rare book, you had to do some digging. Maybe you got in the car and journeyed to used book stores across the Midwest. Maybe you had to find someone equally obsessed with finding the perfect book for your collection.

Retired MN Bookseller Gary Goodman Reflects on 40 Years of Books

In 1982, Gary Goodman wandered into a run-down, used-book shop that was going out of business in East St. Paul. He walked in as a psychiatric counselor and walked out as the store’s new owner. After almost 40 years and a few different stores later, Gary is now semi-retired and he’s written about his book selling experience in his new book The Last Bookseller: A life in the rare book trade.

Review: 'The Last Bookseller,' by Gary Goodman

"A ghost story" is how Gary Goodman characterizes his memoir "The Last Bookseller: A Life in the Rare Book Trade," and there is a whiff of sepia among its pages. It is, after all, about a way of making a living that has changed dramatically in recent years, thanks to the internet, but it's also a swashbuckling tale of thieves and forgers, a man who would be king, celebrities and the never-ending search for gold — in this case, books, rare ones, and the lengths some will go to acquire them.
