WATCH: G. Love, “Mississippi” (Acoustic)

In Their Words: “‘Mississippi’ is a contemporary blues/hip-hop song which lyrically reflects the images and thoughts brought on by the state and historic culture of Mississippi. It’s both a celebration of the blues’ rich musical history and a condemnation of the dark history of racism, Jim Crow and slavery which played such a terrible part in the history of Mississippi and our country as a whole. Here I perform solo guitar and harmonica, singing the lyrics of bluesman Alvin Youngblood Hart and my own lyric, set over a driving riff in the key of E.” — G. Love.

The ‘soft opening’ of Ventura Music Hall, with G. Love

If the inside looks familiar, that’s probably because you’ve visited the building in its past life as a fusion bowling alley/small(er) music venue, formerly known as Discovery Ventura. While the bowling lanes have been replaced in favor of additional high-top seating, the large horseshoe bar, booth seating area and notable Quonset hut-style, wood-paneled ceiling all remain as a quiet reminder of the establishment’s humble beginnings.

G. Love Has Made A Home In Orleans; Now He’s Paying It Forward

ORLEANS -- I arrange to meet Garrett Dutton, better known as G. Love, at his home, a cozy, Cape-style farmhouse complete with a garden, goats and chickens. It's a mild December afternoon, and I'm slightly early as Dutton pulls up behind me in a charmingly beat-up powder blue pickup. Dog in lap, he extends a hand out his window for a shake and invites me to park over on the grass.
