Franz Wagner named first-team Academic All-American; program's first in 40 years

For the first time in 40 years, the Michigan men's basketball team saw one of its players named an Academic First-Team All-American, as Franz Wagner earned the honor on Friday. The distinction, sponsored and voted upon by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), gives Michigan men's basketball its first Academic All-American honoree since Zack Novak made the third team in 2012.

He showed flashes of brilliance in his two years at Michigan, especially his sophomore year on a top-seeded team who shocked many all year. Wagner was a big reason for that as he definitely took that patented sophomore year leap and was able to show off numerous aspects of his game. He struggled in the NCAA Tournament this year but he was excellent yet streaky throughout the regular season.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Michigan star forward announced Tuesday he would enter the NBA Draft. He is projected as one of the top players in the draft this year. During his sophomore season, he was one of the top players in the Big Ten. He averaged 12.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 1.3 steals and 1.0 blocks while starting in 28 games. He was named second team All-Big Ten by coaches and the media following the 2020-21 season.
