The Lakers waived Frank Mason III less than a day after signing him

Just 19 hours after officially signing him to an Exhibit 10 contract, the Los Angeles Lakers have waived Frank Mason III, the team announced. This is an unsurprising development, as the team likely only added Mason to get his rights for their G League team, the South Bay Lakers. NBA teams are required to trim their rosters down to a maximum of 15 players by the start of the regular season (two-way contracts don’t count against this limit), and the Lakers have said they want to leave their final roster spot open for the buyout market and to save money on luxury taxes, so Mason will likely soon be joined by fellow Exhibit 10 signees Trevelin Queen, Chaundee Brown and Cam Oliver.

Lakers sign former G League MVP Frank Mason III to training camp deal, per report

The Los Angeles Lakers have been incredibly patient in filling out the bottom of their roster this offseason. After signing a host of minimum-salary free agents in early August, they were left with only 11 players for nearly a month before moves involving other teams allowed them to add Rajon Rondo and DeAndre Jordan. They eventually promoted undrafted rookie Austin Reaves to the NBA roster, leaving them with 14 players signed for the regular season and only 19 players on the training camp roster. Teams are allowed 20, and finally, with camp already underway, the Lakers settled on player No. 20 on Wednesday.

Lakers Sign Frank Mason III To A Training Camp Deal

Mason, who played college basketball for the University of Kansas, last played in four games last year for the Orlando Magic, before missing the rest of the season with an injury. The ceiling for a guard like Mason is higher than his statistics may show. He was a National Player of the Year when he was a Jayhawk. He was the first player in Big 12 history to average 20 points and 5 assists a game during the regular season, and he was selected as the Big 12 player of the year and a consensus first-team All-American. He also won the 2020 G-League MVP.
