Our View: Emily Mitchell For Town Clerk

Harwich voters will go to the polls on May 17 to select a new town clerk. Jannell Brown, Shelagh Delaney and Emily Mitchell are vying for the job. Each of the candidates has experience in town government and is capable of performing the tasks of town clerk. However, in our view, one candidate stands out as the person who would be the exemplary keeper of the records for the town: current Council On Aging Director Emily Mitchell.

Letter to the Editor: Regarding Ron O’Brien and Emily Mitchell, Candidates for Select Board

I am writing in support of both Ron O’Brien and Emily Mitchell for Select Board. Ron served 7 years on Bedford’s Conservation Commission, and is the facilities Director at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI). He is a civil engineer, and in his leadership role, also handles union negotiations. Given the nature of Select Board work, this experience is pertinent and valuable. Most of all, Ron is one of the kindest, most thoughtful, and most patient people I know. During the Covid crisis, he dedicated himself to very long days, exhaustively redoing the WPI campus to support safe protocols. I also observed him being very generous on a one-to-one basis, for instance sneaking in big tips when restaurants were struggling.

Letter to the Editor: Regarding Emily Mitchell, Candidate for Select Board

When I first moved to Bedford twenty-seven years ago, I remember my mother noting how very civic-minded its citizens were. Emily Mitchell certainly fits this profile. Her dedication to the town is evident through her work on the Select Board. Her many successes and accomplishments include; ensuring that meetings are more accessible and transparent, attending to our streetscapes by adding sidewalks in critical areas, establishing a Disability Commission to work toward ensuring that our public spaces are open and accessible to those with disabilities. She has assisted the town in receiving a yearlong Racial Equity and Municipal Action Plan pilot grant, thus helping to reduce racial divides. Emily has also recruited many new board and committee members, led by the Volunteer Coordinating Committee, to ensure broader representation of Bedford’s population.

Letter to the Editor: Regarding Emily Mitchell, Candidate for Select Board

I am writing in support of Emily Mitchell for re-election to the Select Board. I’ve known Emily for many years and we have shared a set of Red Sox tickets for several years now. She once mentioned that her values are simple: take care of each other and don’t be a jerk. I only wish I could stick to those as well as she does. When she ran for the Select Board 3 years ago, I did take the time to see what she wanted to do and why.
