The Tigers will designate righty Drew Hutchison for assignment prior to Wednesday’s game against the A’s, the team announced Tuesday. The move will create a spot on the active 26-man roster for rookie Joey Wentz, whose call-up was covered here Tuesday. Wentz will make his MLB debut Wednesday night, and then the Tigers will decide whether he or fellow rookie Alex Faedo will get a start next week.

Hutchison (0-3) allowed four runs on two hits across two innings to take the loss Sunday against the Astros. He walked two and struck out four. Outside of the strikeouts, it was a poor outing for Hutchison, who has allowed six earned runs across his last two appearances (three innings pitched). The righty has seen his ERA climb from 1.54 to 4.91 as a result. Considering the 31-year-old has a career 4.97 ERA, it's not too surprising to see his early-season success come to an end. Hutchison shouldn't have a ton of fantasy value the rest of the way.

Hutchison pitched three scoreless innings of relief in Saturday's loss to the Royals. He allowed one hit and one walk while striking out three. Detroit starter Matt Manning went two innings but was pulled due to right shoulder discomfort, so Hutchinson was asked to work the middle part of the game. He did his part and kept the Tigers in the contest, but the bats didn't wake up in the 3-1 loss. Hutchison has been pretty good so far this season with a 2.57 ERA across seven innings of work. The 31-year-old should remain in a long-relief role with limited fantasy upside for now.

Hutchison re-signed Monday with the Tigers on a minor-league contract. Detroit will likely give Hutchison the chance to compete for a spot in the team's Opening Day rotation, though manager AJ Hinch already acknowledged Sunday that Tyler Alexander has a leg up on the No. 5 starter's role. Hutchison spent the majority of the 2021 campaign with the Tigers' Triple-A affiliate in Toledo, though injuries at the big-league level allowed him to make nine appearances (two starts) with he parent club. Over 21.1 innings with Detroit, Hutchison went 3-1 and submitted a 2.11 ERA, but a 10:11 K:BB and a .275 BABIP point to him benefiting from some good fortune.

The Detroit Tigers announced Friday that two pitchers were waived by the organization: right-hander Drew Hutchison and left-hander Ian Krol. Hutchison and Krol were set for raises in salary arbitration, but the Tigers removed them from the roster to clear space in preparation for their offseason tasks. Both players cleared waivers and elected free agency, rather than accepting their assignments to Triple-A Toledo.

Hutchison signed a minor-league contract with the Tigers on Sunday. Hutchison pitched at the Triple-A level in 2019, posting a 5.82 ERA and 1.49 WHIP over 25 appearances (23 starts).
