State agency declines Perrysburg request for noxious-weed declaration

State officials have declined to declare as noxious a weed growing in Perrysburg fields that neighboring residents say has sickened their pets and spread into their lawns. “After discussing this with various stakeholders,” Dorothy Pelanda, the Ohio Department of Agriculture’s director said in a letter Wednesday to Perrysburg Mayor Thomas Mackin, “ODA has decided not to add foxtail barley to the noxious weed list at this time.... We will continue to monitor this species and are willing to work with the property owner and farmer to help with mitigation strategies.” No further explanation was given for the decision, which followed a site visit by the department’s chief of plant health. Foxtail barley is a native, perennial grass that thrives in disturbed soils and is adaptable to a variety of soil types. It can cause illness among animals that eat it, both from its seeds and from barbs that can stick to their mouths and faces, and each plant can produce hundreds of seeds each year.
