The Checkers have added a veteran presence to their goaltending corps, signing Devan Dubnyk to a professional tryout contract (PTO). The 35-year-old netminder has logged 542 NHL games over his career, posting a 253-206-54 record with a 2.61 goals-against average and a .914 save percentage while earning three NHL All-Star Game appearances, a Masterton Trophy and Second NHL All-Star Team honors.

Dubnyk will work as the backup for Sunday's Game 4 in St. Louis after being scratched for the first three games, Peter Baugh of The Athletic reports. Philipp Grubauer will remain the starter, but Dubnyk will likely become the primary backup moving forward now that he's gotten up to speed following a stint in the COVID-19 protocols. Dubnyk's return will push Jonas Johansson back into the No. 3 role.

Dubnyk (not injury related) has come off the COVID-19 protocols list, Scott MacDonald of Colorado Hockey Now reports. Dubnyk stepped on the ice Monday since coming off the list, but he was not active for Colorado's 4-1 win over St. Louis in Game 1 of their playoff series. For now, Jonas Johansson is backing up Philipp Grubauer.

Dubnyk (COVID-19 protocols) still isn't practicing Sunday, Adrian Dater of ColoradoHockeyNow.com reports. Dubnyk's inability to practice suggests he won't be available for Monday's Game 1 against the Blues. Jonas Johansson should continue to back up Philipp Grubauer until Dubnyk works himself back into game shape.

Dubnyk allowed four goals on 25 shots in Wednesday's 5-2 loss to the Golden Knights. The fifth goal was an empty-netter. Dubnyk had to play from behind almost immediately when William Karlsson scored 10 seconds into the game. Devon Toews tied the game later in the first period, but the Golden Knights took over for good in the second. Through 21 games, Dubnyk is 5-11-2 with a 3.21 GAA and an .896 save percentage between the Sharks and the Avalanche. With a back-to-back versus the Sharks on Friday and Saturday, Dubnyk has a good chance of playing at least one game against his former team.

Dubnyk stopped 25 of 29 shots in Saturday's 5-3 loss to the Blues. The final St. Louis goal was scored into an empty net. Dubynk got staked to a 2-0 lead just over three minutes into the first period, but he'd squandered it before the first intermission, and the Avs never led again. The veteran netminder took his first loss in three starts since being traded to Colorado, and joining a Stanley Cup contender doesn't seem to have lit a spark under Dubnyk as he has a 3.04 GAA and .900 save percentage with his new team.

Dubnyk will guard the road goal during Thursday's matchup with the Blues, Peter Baugh of The Athletic reports. Dubnyk was solid in his last start April 14 against the Blues, stopping 31 of 34 shots en route to a 4-3 victory. The 34-year-old goaltender will attempt to secure a second straight win over the same St. Louis squad Thursday.
