Denée Benton on her role in The Gilded Age, the Royal Family and not feeling like ‘the right type of black girl’

Denée Benton has the perfect posture of a ballerina, and carries herself with regal majesty – not diminished by the white dressing gown she’s wearing over lime-green baggy trousers as she perches on a velvet sofa, a tray of steak, rice and vegetables on her lap. In fact, so commanding is the 30-year-old’s presence that she could easily be mistaken for the chatelaine of the Baroque-style stone mansion north of Manhattan, overlooking the Hudson River, in which the Tatler photoshoot is taking place.
