Reds OF Delino DeShields elects free agency

Reds outfielder Delino DeShields Jr. has refused an outright assignment and become a free agent, reports MLB.com’s Mark Sheldon (via tweet). The speedy outfielder bounced around a few organizations this year after signing with the Rangers on a minor league deal. Owing to a robust walk rate and strong base stealing numbers in their Triple-A affiliate, Texas found a trade partner in Boston to take in DeShields as outfield depth and a potential playoff weapon. Cincinnati found similar appeal in DeShields and plucked him from the Red Sox in an early August deal for cash.

Delino DeShields: Becomes free agent

DeShields refused an outright assignment to Triple-A Louisville and is now a free agent, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. He logged an .801 OPS in 25 games with the Reds last season and will seek to keep his options open this offseason. There probably won't be a big-league deal waiting for him, but he may find a non-roster invitee deal in a situation he likes.

Reds' Delino DeShields: Sits after two straight starts

DeShields is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Pirates. Though top center fielder Tyler Naquin (ribs) remains on the bench for the third game in a row, DeShields will drop out of the lineup and give way to Shogo Akiyama. Based on his usage since being added to the active roster Sept. 1, DeShields looks to be the Reds' fourth outfielder ahead of Aristides Aquino and Akiyama, but the 29-year-old hasn't done much with his opportunities thus far. In 10 games with Cincinnati, DeShields has gone 4-for-19 (.211 average) with two doubles, three RBI, zero runs and zero steals.

Cincinnati Reds trade for Delino DeShields from Boston

The Cincinnati Reds have made a trade to acquire outfielder Delino DeShields from the Boston Red Sox. He is the son of Reds first base coach Delino DeShields. This move is one at the minor league level. DeShields is not on the 40-man roster and has not been added to the 40-man roster. The Reds traded an undisclosed amount of cash for the 29-year-old outfielder and assigned him to Triple-A Louisville.

Delino DeShields forgoes opt-out clause, will remain with Rangers

Outfielder Delino DeShields Jr. has foregone the June 1 opt-out clause in his minor-league contract and will remain with the Rangers for the time being, per Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News (Twitter link). Grant notes that the Rangers are still open to helping DeShields land on a big-league roster if the opportunity presents itself. The Yankees reportedly looked into a trade involving DeShields but have thus far opted to go in another direction. Given Texas’ openness to helping DeShields back to the majors, the Yankees probably wouldn’t have to give much of anything in return.
