Guest columnists Dean Brown and Mary-Moore Cathcart: Juror says Biennial judging process is not fair or right

I was one of the jurors for this year’s Western Mass Visual and Poetry Biennial and I fully support the Northampton Arts Council’s decision to cancel the Biennial. I was the only white juror on the jury panel. It did not occur to me that the process we were in — the “blind” jury, etc. — was not an equitable process. I thought that if we were all judging the submissions without knowing who the artists were — not knowing their race, their gender, their nationality — that it meant somehow that the process was fair.

Dean Brown sees students as researchers, problem solvers

“I have always felt that being a researcher and being an educator go hand in hand because as a researcher, you are discovering; you are creating new knowledge. Then, as an educator, you are sharing the knowledge, and you are relating it to the things that students know, hopefully in a way that they can start to build on. Brown began at WKU on July 1 with a focus on student-centered learning and giving students an opportunity to see themselves as real-world problem solvers.

But his performance Friday night at the Miller Center for the Arts at Reading Area Community College will be a first, not just for Reading but anywhere.

Dean Brown: Global Fusion on Acid

There is just more of a sense of urgency to the east coast vibe. There's a fire, a reckless abandonment sort of thing. From the outset, the equation was simple enough. Jazz + rock = fusion. However, whether it was Miles Davis, Larry Coryell, John McLaughlin, or any of the pioneers of fusion, the music has always been far from simplistic. Musical depth has long been the trademark of a genre that has been through many incarnations and traversed a multitude of directions. Jazz and rock has been supplemented through time by funk and Latin and other enriching flavors of sound.
