PITTSBURGH — Bishop David Zubik of the Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh issued a statement condemning the invasion of Ukraine and calling for peace. “As Ukraine suffers a brutal and unjustified invasion, I call on all people to join Pope Francis in observing Ash Wednesday, March 2, as a day of fasting and prayer for peace. This Russian aggression shatters and further threatens the peace that has largely prevailed in Europe and the West since the end of World War II.

Pittsburgh Bishop David Zubik out of surgery, injury worse than anticipated

Bishop David Zubik underwent successful shoulder surgery Monday, but Diocese of Pittsburgh officials said the bishop’s injury was worse than initially thought. The surgery to repair a “significant tear” in Zubik’s left shoulder took two hours, said diocesan spokesperson Jennifer Antkowiak. The surgeon at UPMC Mercy found the damage more extensive than anticipated, but the tear was still able to be repaired.
