Dave Joerger is tired of slathering pancakes with butter and syrup. And of seeking out soft-textured proteins such as eggs and fish. And of downing scoops of mashed potatoes. It’s still difficult for Joerger to eat and swallow, making every meal and snack feel like a workout with the goal of collecting calories instead of burning them. But it sure beats the feeding tube the 76ers’ lead assistant coach had hooked to his stomach for weeks.

The Philadelphia 76ers are giving an encouraging update on the health of assistant coach Dave Joerger. The Sixers announced on Wednesday that Joerger will be returning to their bench on a full-time basis. Joerger had been away from the team since Nov. 13 to receive treatment for cancer. The Sixers add that Joerger’s treatments concluded in mid-December and that he will continue his recovery as he rejoins the coaching staff.

Philadelphia 76ers assistant coach Dave Joerger announced Saturday night that he’s stepping away from the team for several weeks to undergo cancer treatment. Joerger, 47, told ESPN he has a form of “head and neck” cancer that is in Stage 1, and he’s already been receiving treatment. Joerger initially noticed a lump in his throat roughly 15 months ago and notified his physician.
