Date set, candidates lining up, for special election to fill state Sen. Dave Arnold's seat

Democrats and Republicans are rounding up their candidates for a special election to fill the 48th state senatorial district on May 18. Lt. Gov. John Fetterman Monday signed a writ calling for the special election to coincide with the 2021 primary. The 48th District includes Lebanon County and parts of York and Dauphin counties. The seat was held by state Sen. Dave Arnold, who died Jan. 17 of brain cancer.

HARRISBURG, Pa. — Lt. Gov. John Fetterman has formally called for a special election to replace recently deceased State Sen. Dave Arnold. Fetterman said in a statement, "The need for this election arises from the tragic death of a young husband and father. Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf has ordered all commonwealth flags to fly at half-staff in honor of Republican state Sen. Dave Arnold, who died Sunday of brain cancer. “I extend my heartfelt condolences to the Arnold family following the passing of Senator Dave Arnold,” Wolf said in a statement. “Dave was a dedicated public servant and conscientious leader who put the people of his district first, always. He fought hard every day for his constituents, even while he was fighting a terrible disease. Our commonwealth has lost a great public servant.”

Pennsylvania state Sen. Dave Arnold dead at 49

Pennsylvania state Sen. Dave Arnold, R-Lebanon, died at home Sunday from brain cancer. The 49-year-old lawmaker represented the Senate’s 48th district in parts of Lebanon, Dauphin and York counties after winning a special election last year to replace Mike Folmer, who is serving a two-year prison sentence on child pornography charges.
