Oilers' Darnell Nurse: Contributes helper in loss

Nurse posted an assist and four hits in Wednesday's 4-1 loss to the Jets in Game 1. Nurse had the secondary helper on Jesse Puljujarvi's second-period tally. The 26-year-old Nurse did a little bit of everything in 56 regular-season games -- he had 16 goals, 36 points, a plus-27 rating, 154 shots on net, 117 hits and 100 blocked shots. The defenseman will likely see a ton of minutes as a top-pairing option, and he should be able to contribute in some way more often than not during the postseason.

There was no penalty on the play. MacEwen and Nurse battled with each other for a while, before getting into a fight in the third period.

Vancouver Canucks forward Zack MacEwen suspended for one game for kneeing Darnell Nurse

The NHL Department of Player Safety announced this afternoon that Vancouver Canucks forward Zack MacEwen has been suspended for one game. The play in question came roughly midway through the second period, where MacEwen received a breakout pass just inside of his own blueline with Nurse stepping up in the play to make a hit. MacEwen took exception to the hit — which caught MacEwen looking the other way. As Nurse laid on the ice, MacEwen skated towards the bench and directed his knee towards the head of Nurse.

Darnell Nurse for Norris Trophy? Just maybe

Darnell Nurse for Norris Trophy? Just maybe. I’m a glass half full type of Edmonton Oilers fan, prone to over-estimating the team and over-valuing various Oilers players. But I have to admit I’d never really taken seriously the talk of Nurse being a Norris Trophy candidate in 2021, not until yesterday when I saw a report from NHL.com, then dug into some related statistics.

Darnell Nurse Is Playing His Way to the Olympics

Coming into this season, Edmonton Oilers defenseman Darnell Nurse had his expectations raised unexpectedly. With the team’s No. 1 defenseman, Oscar Klefbom, being declared out for the season, someone on the back end needed to step up. Nurse, a former seventh-overall pick, wanted to be that guy, saying, “You lose a guy as big as Klef, every guy has to pick up a little extra. For me, playing the left side, a lot of that responsibility is going to fall on my shoulders. I look forward to the challenge.”
