Red Wings: Appreciating Danny DeKeyser

Danny DeKeyser has almost certainly played his last game for the Detroit Red Wings, but he has earned appreciation and respect. DeKeyser started the NHL season as a 31-year-old stalwart and alternate captain of the Detroit Red Wings. Many NHL defensemen are still in their prime at 31 but compared to the Red Wings’ other alternate captain, Marc Staal, who is 4 years older and is still a contributor to the defensive corps; DeKeyser is an old 31. Two years removed from major back surgery, we were hopeful that had regained his strength, if not his youthful speed. It did not happen.

Red Wings' Danny DeKeyser: Sneaks in secondary helper

DeKeyser produced an assist in Saturday's 7-2 loss to the Penguins. Aside from the occasional assist and blocked shot -- he's collected 10 and 98 of those respectively -- DeKeyser has failed to put up meaningful stats in his 10th NHL campaign. In all likelihood, the Wings let him walk as an unrestricted free agent this summer.

Red Wings' Danny DeKeyser: Ready to rock

DeKeyser (undisclosed) has been activated off injured reserve and will play Wednesday versus the Rangers. DeKeyser has been out for three weeks, so he may be eased back into action, though he's still expected to play a top-four role. Jordan Oesterle will exit the lineup to make room for DeKeyser, who has six assists, 50 shots on net, 80 blocked shots and a minus-12 rating in 43 appearances this season.

Recently cut Detroit Red Wing Danny DeKeyser may have played his final NHL game

A fixture on the blueline for the Detroit Red Wings since the 2012-13 NHL Season may very possibly have appeared in his final NHL game. Veteran defenseman Danny DeKeyser, who has appeared in 531 career NHL games with the Red Wings since signing as a free agent after his collegiate career at Western Michigan, was waived by the team yesterday afternoon. The harsh reality of the business of dealings in the National Hockey League was also evident considering that yesterday also happened to be DeKeyser’s birthday.
