Catching up with former NL MVP and Portland's own Dale Murphy

During recent visit, former Atlanta Brave recounts learning baseball as a youth in Portland and how MLB can improve. Baseball can be a confounding game. Dale Murphy knows that better than most. Considered a five-tool player when he was drafted in 1974 out of Portland's Wilson High, Murphy was hyped as the next Johnny Bench when he joined the Atlanta Braves. The catching thing didn't work out (though he was behind home plate for 87 games in the major leagues). When throwing accurately to second base became troublesome, Murphy gave first base a try — initially borrowing a glove from...

Dale Murphy And Andruw Jones, Centers Of Attention In Atlanta, Take Separate Steps Toward Cooperstown

Only occasionally does one team produce multiple superstars who played the same position years apart. The New York Yankees had Bill Dickey and Yogi Berra, catchers so good that No. 8 was retired in both their names, as well as gifted center-fielders Joe DiMaggio and Mickey Mantle. The Boston Red Sox had a left-field legacy that led from Ted Williams to Jim Rice. And the Milwaukee-to-Atlanta Braves had slugging third basemen Eddie Mathews and Chipper Jones.

Braves Throwback Thursday: Move to outfield launches Dale Murphy to stardom in 1980

Changing defensive positions at the Major League level is often easier said than done. Evan Gattis, Ryan Klesko and Chipper Jones are among the many Atlanta Braves sluggers who the club at one time or another tried unsuccessfully to convert to the outfield. Gattis and Klesko lacked the agility for the defensive nuances of the position, while Jones suffered a series of foot and leg injuries that temporarily endangered his Hall-of-Fame career.

The Hall of Fame case for Dale Murphy: Examining the merits of the 'character clause'

How I learned to stop worrying and love the Dale Murphy Hall of Fame case. When it comes to voting for the National Baseball Hall of Fame, the discourse each year is less and less about a player’s on-field accomplishments and more and more about the “character clause.” We have to put it in quotes because there’s nothing actually called the character clause in the Hall’s rules. In fact, of the 665 words under “BBWAA Rules for Election” on the Hall of Fame’s website, only 26 of them actually pertain to how voting members of the Baseball Writers Association of America should determine whom to vote for:
