Capitals wisely send Connor McMichael to Hershey

It should’ve been done sooner but in the end it had to be done regardless. The Washington Capitals sent Connor McMichael to the Hershey Bears to continue his development. Capitals head coach Peter Laviolette refused to play McMichael for some odd reason despite all the injuries that piled up on the team. But sitting in the press box instead of playing actual minutes in the NHL or even the AHL is unhealthy for a young buck like McMichael.

Washington Capitals loan former first-round pick Connor McMichael to AHL

The Washington Capitals announced they have loaned young forward Connor McMichael to the Hershey Bears, their AHL affiliate. No corresponding move was made. Of note, however, is that T..J. Oshie, who is currently on IR with a lower-body injury, was seen warming up at Capitals practice Sunday morning in a regular jersey, as opposed to the non-contact jersey he had been wearing, according to’s Tom Gulitti. The Washington Post’s Samantha Pell suggests that not only Oshie, but also defenseman Dmitry Orlov, could be ready for a return to action. Capitals' Connor McMichael: Loaned to AHL Hershey

McMichael was loaned to AHL Hershey on Sunday. McMichael has appeared in six games with the Capitals this season, posting two shots on goal, three blocks and two hits. He has averaged just 8:52 of ice time. McMichael should see a dramatic increase in playing time in the minors. Demoting him to the AHL clears a potential roster spot for the activation of Dmitry Orlov (lower body) or T.J. Oshie (lower body) from injured reserve.

2021-22 Rink Wrap: Connor McMichael

The Key Stat: 10:14 - Connor McMichael’s 5v5 time on ice per game during his 68 regular season games played. That’s almost a full minute and a half less than what fourth-liners Garnet Hathaway and Nic Dowd were getting, and same goes for Daniel Sprong, who was shipped out of town. Newcomer Johan Larsson was awarded more ice time per game than McMike, despite being the fresh face in town. Hell, even Axel Jonsson-Fjallby technically got more 5v5 ice per game in his 23 appearances than McMichael. In fact, there wasn’t a single regular skater who saw less ice per game than the Caps’ supposed top prospect.

Capitals' Connor McMichael: Earns first playoff point

McMichael notched an assist and two hits in Wednesday's 5-3 loss to the Panthers in Game 5. McMichael had the secondary helper on T.J. Oshie's second goal of the game. The assist was McMichael's first career playoff point, though he remains limited to bottom-six minutes through three postseason appearances. He's added one shots on goal and four hits, but he's yet to see more than 8:35 of ice time in a game, so he's unlikely to be much of a contributor in fantasy.
