A pair of Villanova stars, senior guard Collin Gillespie and sophomore forward Maddy Siegrist, were named the Big 5′s men’s and women’s players of the year in a vote of coaches and selected members of the media.

Wildcats head coaches Jay Wright and Denise Dillon captured Big 5 coach of the year honors. Guards Jordan Hall of St. Joseph’s and Damian Dunn of Temple were elected the men’s co-rookies of the year. Hawks redshirt junior forward Taylor Funk was chosen as most improved player, and sophomore guard Christian Ray of La Salle was named scholar-athlete of the year.

Big East regular season title, three times. Big East Tournament Champion, twice. All-Big East Team, twice. Big East Play of the Year. NCAA Champion. All of that, and we still would have felt cheated had Collin Gillespie not suited up next season for the Wildcats. Villanova’s senior captain marshalled his team through a challenging season all to be deprived of the opportunity to play for yet another conference tournament title and NCAA tournament championship. Thankfully we don’t have to live in a reality where Gillespie doesn’t get the chance he deserves to finish on his terms.

Villanova got some great news for its 2021-22 roster on Monday when seniors Collin Gillespie and Jermaine Samuels announced they will return for another season. Although leading scorer Jeremiah Robinson-Earl has declared for the NBA Draft and signed with an agent, the returns of Gillespie and Samuels ensure the Wildcats will have an elite core of veterans.

The Villanova Wildcats had some big news yesterday. Jay Wright will be back with another great team next season. The Villanova duo of Collin Gillespie and Jermaine Samuels Jr. is set to return for another season. Gillespie’s season was cut short due to injury and with the NCAA granting an extra year to virtually all players, he will be able to take the 5th year for Nova next season. The same goes for Samuels.
