It can be a bit mind-boggling to witness the accelerated maturation that fame provokes in bright, talented instant stars whose careers begin extraordinarily early, while their brains are still forming. This is very much the case with Clairo, aka Claire Cottrill, who shot to sensation status in 2018 when the upload of her original song, “Pretty Girl,” went viral and garnered more than 75 million views, leading to a record deal at age 19 with Fader Label, and soon after the release of a debut EP, Diary 001.

‘The Breakdown’: Clairo, Jack Antonoff Dive Into ‘Amoeba’ at Electric Lady Studios

Clairo describes the viral success that followed her video “Pretty Girl” as the “googly-eyed, deer-in-headlights,” years of her career. “I was so desperate for validation in the beginning,” she told Rolling Stone in her recent cover story. “I just really wanted to be liked.” Claire Cottrill reflected on that period on “Amoeba,” a gem from her new album, Sling. ” ‘Amoeba’ is essentially me scolding myself,” she says in latest Breakdown video at Electric Lady Studios, accompanied by her producer Jack Antonoff. “When I first started making music and just being starstruck by the entire experience, I got wrapped up in the wrong...

NME Radio Roundup 26 July 2021: Lorde, Syd, Clairo, Logic1000 and more

Lorde’s third album, ‘Solar Power’, is locked in for release this August, and in anticipation of the upcoming record she’s dropped the poignant ‘Stoned at the Nail Salon’. The folk-flecked cut sees Lorde ruminate on getting older over lilting guitars and sparse production, and the delicate song leads this week’s additions to NME Radio. Also on the list is the mesmerising new one from Syd, cathartic grooves from Clairo, and a posthumously created collaboration between the late Pop Smoke and Dua Lipa.

Clairo Says She Won’t Tour At All Unless There’s Added Security At Her Shows

Clairo, who just released her sophomore album Sling last week, has said that she doesn’t plan to play any live shows unless there’s added security in place for her fans. Speaking to NME, Clairo (real name Claire Cottrill) said she wanted to look out for fans’ safety around assault, harassment, and other such uncomfortable situations at her shows. Overall, she wants to create a safer environment, saying, “We’re talking to some companies right now. We’ve made extra room on our tour bus for at least two more members of security.”

Lorde Assists Clairo On Another New ‘Sling’ Song, The Gentle ‘Reaper’

While Clairo’s debut album, 2019’s Immunity, was co-written in part with Rostam Batmanglij, on her latest, the newly released Sling, she teamed up with Jack Antonoff. That connection allowed her to get acquainted with Lorde, who provided background vocals on the single “Blouse” (and in turn got Clairo to feature on her own “Solar Power“). In a Rolling Stone interview published last week, it was revealed that Lorde also contributed vocals to the Sling cut “Reaper,” and now that the album is out today, so too is the new Clairo/Lorde collaboration.

Clairo: ‘This industry drains young women until they’re not youthful any more’

Exuding all the effusive pride of a new parent, Claire Cottrill is showing me photos of Joanie, her rescue dog and the muse for her forthcoming album, Sling. “She’s actually really bossy,” the Massachusetts-raised artist better known as Clairo chuckles over Zoom, holding her phone close to the laptop screen so I can see the Instagram post more clearly. “But she’s so funny. We have such a special bond.”

SU alum Clairo finds peace on new album recorded in Upstate NY, lands Rolling Stone cover

Syracuse University alumna Claire Cottrill, better known as singer-songwriter Clairo, is opening up about her struggles to find peace in a new Rolling Stone interview. Cottrill told the magazine that the Covid-19 pandemic taught her to slow her life down after her bedroom-pop song “Pretty Girl” went viral on YouTube when she was a 19-year-old freshman at SU. The song hit 1 million views when she was at a party at SU, and now it’s got 75 million hits.

New Mix: Aldous Harding, Clairo, Matthew E. White, More

On this week's All Songs Considered I've got a few familiar voices and some thrilling new ones. You might not know Big Red Machine by name, but it's a project that includes The National's Aaron Dessner and Bon Iver's Justin Vernon, among others. The song I play from them features Anaïs Mitchell, the creator of the musical Hadestown. I've also got new music from one of my favorite artists of the past five years, Aldous Harding, plus new music from Richmond, Virginia's Matthew E. White. Also, the singer Clairo returns with music from her second album, co-produced by Jack Antonoff.
