See Cillian Murphy as J. Robert Oppenheimer on N.J. set of Christopher Nolan film with all-star cast
Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film “Oppenheimer” is so stuffed with A-list actors that “Oscar bait” seems like a sore understatement. Cillian Murphy (”Peaky Blinders”) stars as J. Robert Oppenheimer, the father of the atomic bomb, in the movie, which has been filming in Princeton.
New set photos from Nolan's Oppenheimer picture Cillian Murphy and Robert Downey Jr. suited and booted
Cillian Murphy and Robert Downey Jr. have been spotted looking sharp on the set of Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer. The film is a biopic of J. Robert Oppenheimer, who is credited as the father of the atomic bomb. Murphy plays the scientist himself, while Downey Jr. is the Atomic Energy Commission chairman Lewis Strauss, who was a major force in Oppenheimer's security clearance being revoked.
Last Sunday night, almost four million people tuned in to witness Cillian Murphy signing off as Tommy Shelby – for now, at least. The finale of Peaky Blinders, which had spent much of the season hinting that it might do away with our antihero for good, instead opted to keep matters open, with a masterful twist that might as well have been an apology for all of the meandering routes it took to get there. (I can’t have been the only one wondering why the gangster-turned-MP, who remained handy with a firearm and loose with the law, still appeared to have more scruples and ethics than most of the bunch currently in charge of the country.) The final episode was a deserved reward for those of us who stuck with the show, during what I found to be a confusing last season.
Christopher Nolan movies are an experience. That experience differs from film to film, from person to person, from concept to concept — but you are always left changed in some way, wholly different from the moviegoer you were two hours before. He uses many tools to cast this spell on you: his dreamlike yet intricately structured writing, his similarly intoxicating directing style, the sheer scope and breadth of the production design of his worlds, just to name a few.
The Irish actor plays theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer. Cillian Murphy plays the titular theoretical physicist in Christopher Nolan's upcoming J. Robert Oppenheimer biopic, Oppenheimer. Despite the fact that Oppenheimer's world-changing scientific work is at the heart of the film's plot, Murphy said that he isn't taking any science classes in preparation for the role.
Cillian Murphy Reveals Preparations for Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer. Cillian Murphy has remembered his "Peaky Blinders" co-star Helen McCrory, who died at the age of 52 last year due to breast cancer, naming her as the funniest person he worked with on the sets of the popular crime drama series. The 45-year-old Irish actor had an interview with BBC...
Cillian Murphy would have a hard time saying no to a Christopher Nolan project. The actor — who will soon appear in Nolan's Oppenheimer, as atomic bomb physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer — recently spoke with Variety about teaming up with the director once more, after the two previously worked together on Inception, Dunkirk and Nolan's Batman films.
Cillian Murphy has admitted to skipping the technical specifications of designing and building an atomic bomb while prepping for Christopher Nolan’s new war movie Oppenheimer. That’s not to say he hasn’t done any research on the real-life man he’ll be playing, he just didn’t look into the technical side of building a weapon of mass destruction.

Director Christopher Nolan and actor Cillian Murphy go way back, with the former having first cast the latter as Dr. Jonathan Crane, a.k.a. The Scarecrow, in 2005’s Batman Begins. However, the upcoming Oppenheimer finally sees Murphy getting to do something he’s never done in a Nolan-helmed movie before: play the lead role. Murphy is starring as J. Robert Oppenheimer in Nolan’s Tenet follow-up, and the actor has shared how he’s preparing to play who’s been referred to as the “father of the atomic bomb.”
