Sykes, Tuesday, 20.30, BBC4

To The Manor Born and The Young Ones continue their repeat runs tonight, but sandwiching them is something we haven’t seen for a while. When it ended in 1979 it had a good claim to be the Beeb’s longest-running sitcom, as it technically began back in 1960, though there was a gap between 1965 and 1972 and when it returned most of the episodes were remakes of the sixties shows, although as many of those had been wiped they were new to most viewers. Perhaps because of that it seemed quite an old-fashioned show even at the time, mostly studio-bound with pretty limited horizons, Eric and Hat seemingly happy with their lot in Sebastapol Terrace eating corned beef and drinking tea. Nice to see such gifted comic actors at work, in any case, this Christmas show from 1975 originally being transmitted on that prime festive day of 12th December.
