Joanna Jędrzejczyk Dismisses Carla Esparza As Next SW Title Contender

Former champ Joanna Jędrzejczyk is not a big fan of the idea of champion Rose Namajunas and Carla Esparza running their fight back again. Jędrzejczyk last stepped in the Octagon in March of 2020 at UFC 248 where she lost a split decision in a shoo-in for “fight of the year”. In particular, the former strawweight great faced Weili Zhang and despite it being a dragged-out war, the Polish striker came up short in the end. As a result of the fight, the former champion also took heavy damage with a notable hematoma on her forehead.

Joanna Jedrzejczyk shoots down the idea of a UFC rematch between Carla Esparza and Rose Namajunas

Joanna Jedrzejczyk has shot down the idea of a title fight rematch between Carla Esparza and UFC women’s strawweight champion Rose Namajunas. Jedrzejczyk hasn’t fought since UFC 248 in March 2020, when she lost a spirited split decision to former champ Weili Zhang in one of the best fights of last year. Since then, the Polish fighter hasn’t stepped back into the Octagon, but she is hoping to return to the cage later this year, and she has been adamant that she fights for the belt when she returns. However, Esparza’s recent TKO win over Yan Xiaonan would indicate she’s next in line.

UFC women’s strawweight contender Carla Esparza hopes the UFC gives her the next title shot against Rose Namajunas, saying “Come on Dana.”. Esparza is coming off of an incredible TKO win over Yan Xiaonan at UFC Vegas 27 last weekend that was the statement she needed to make in order to earn a title shot with Namajunas. Esparza has now won her last five fights in a row, including notable victories over the likes of Marina Rodriguez and Michelle Waterson during that stretch, and she’s hoping that the win over Yan in such devastating fashion will earn her the next title shot.

UFC fighter rankings: Carla Esparza cracks top ten on women’s P4P list

The UFC is taking a rare break this coming out of UFC Vegas 27, which honestly didn’t bring a lot of intrigue. While the main event fight between Rob Font and Cody Garbrandt was quite good, Font shut out the former champ and stayed in the same place in the rankings. The co-main saw the most impact from a rankings perspective, with Carla Esparza making a case for a title shot at women’s bantamweight with a TKO win over Yan Xiaonan.

Opinion: Making a case for Carla Esparza

After five consecutive wins over more than respectable competition, Carla Esparza called for the rematch she has been dying for on Saturday night. Not because she has to get one back against Rose Namajunas, but because Namajunas has something Esparza wants back: the UFC strawweight title. Given there is no one else with a comparable winning streak against the level of competition she has faced, it would only seem natural Esparza will get what she asked for… right?

Morning Report: Daniel Cormier says Carla Esparza deserves next title shot but ‘just having earned something doesn’t always equate to getting it in the UFC’

In the co-main event his past Saturday at UFC Vegas 27, former strawweight champion Carla Esparza staked her claim to another title shot with a second-round TKO over third-ranked Yan Xiaonan. It was a dominant performance from Esparza who repeatedly grounded Yan with takedowns and beat her up on the ground, finally finishing the fight from a mounted crucifix position. After the victory Esparza called for a shot at current strawweight champion Rose Namajunas who Esparza already has a history with, having beaten Namajunas to claim the inaugural strawweight title. But though many believe Esparza should be next in line, others, like UFC commentator and former two-division champion Daniel Cormier, are not so sure that’s in the cards.

LAS VEGAS -- If Carla Esparza's goal was to cement herself as the UFC's No. 1 strawweight contender on Saturday, she certainly did everything she could to make it happen. The fight, which took place at the UFC's Apex, could earn Esparza a title shot against the newly crowned champion Rose Namajunas.
