Presidents Day 2022: John Adams, JFK and Calvin Coolidge among Massachusetts residents to hold executive office

As Presidents Day approaches on Monday, Feb. 21, it comes time to celebrate some leaders who held executive office in the United States. The federal holiday is always celebrated on the third Monday in February and was established in 1885 to recognize the first ever president, George Washington. The day gained popularity as a celebration of Washington’s birthday and was eventually moved as part of the Uniform Monday Holiday Act in 1971, according to History.com. The day is now celebrated to honor all U.S. presidents.

Bible verse - Romans Rom.9:22-24; quote by Calvin Coolidge

Romans Rom.9:22-24 Christmas is not a time nor a season, but a state of mind. To cherish peace and goodwill, to be plenteous in mercy, is to have the real spirit of Christmas. Calvin Coolidge (1872-1933) was an American lawyer and politician who served as the 30th president of the United States from 1923 to 1929. A Republican lawyer from New England, born in Vermont, Coolidge worked his way up the ladder of Massachusetts state politics, eventually becoming governor of Massachusetts.

Hendrickson: Calvin Coolidge, A Forgotten Champion of Labor

“The Full-Dinner Pail” was a campaign slogan utilized by President William McKinley and other Republicans to symbolize support for working Americans. It is often assumed that Republicans are opposed to labor, but this notion is false. President Donald J. Trump’s America First policies were pro-labor. Whether unshackling businesses from excessive regulations, cutting tax rates, and pursuing trade agreements that place the interests of American workers first, President Trump was working to improve the lives of workers across the nation. J.D. Vance, author of Hillbilly Elegy and current candidate for the Republican Senate nomination in Ohio, is campaigning on a similar agenda of placing workers and families first. President Trump and Vance are just two recent examples of conservatives who are campaigning and fighting for pro-labor policies. Nevertheless, these policies have a historical track record of success and providing opportunity, most notably those of President Calvin Coolidge.

Great American Stories: When Calvin Coolidge Stepped Up

Ninety-eight years ago today, Calvin Coolidge took the oath of office upon the death of Warren G. Harding. It was a most unusual presidential swearing-in, and certainly the most private. "On the night of August 2, 1923, I was awakened by my father coming up the stairs, calling my name,"...

Richard Szlosek: Honoring Calvin Coolidge

As a member of the standing committee of the Calvin Coolidge Presidential Museum, I wish to state my appreciation for the Gazette now placing the Coolidge quote on freedom of the press at the top of the opinion page. It is especially timely since Thursday, March 4 was the 100th anniversary of Coolidge’s inauguration as vice-president of the United States.
