Tigers select veteran reliever Buck Farmer

The Tigers announced Sunday morning they’ve selected the contract of Buck Farmer. Beau Burrows was optioned to Triple-A Toledo last night to clear active roster space. Jeimer Candelario was placed on the COVID-19 injured list on Saturday while he goes through intake protocols after going on bereavement leave. That temporarily opens a 40-man roster spot for Farmer, but Detroit will need to make another 40-man move once Candelario clears the intake process.

Detroit Tigers add Buck Farmer from Triple-A Toledo because 'he's pitched his way back'

The Detroit Tigers needed pitching help. Left-hander Matthew Boyd offered up a solution: He told manager AJ Hinch he could move up a day — to his initial Sunday slot — rather than having his start pushed back to Monday. The Tigers wanted to give Boyd and the rest of the starting rotation an extra day to rest, but then they had to use five pitchers and two position players in Saturday's 15-2 loss to the Chicago White Sox.

Tigers' Buck Farmer: Designated for assignment

Farmer was designated for assignment by the Tigers on Friday. Farmer had been with the team since Opening Day but struggled through 12 relief appearances. He owns a 12.66 ERA and 2.25 WHIP through 10.2 innings, walking 16.1 percent of opposing batters while striking out just 17.9 percent. As a 30-year-old with a career 5.47 ERA, there's seemingly a good chance he passes through waivers and remains a part of the Tigers' organization.

Tigers' Buck Farmer: Hit hard again Monday

Farmer allowed three runs on a hit and three walks across 1.2 innings in Monday's 15-6 loss to the Twins. He struck out one. No Detroit pitcher had much luck in the blowout loss, and Farmer served up a solo home run to Nelson Cruz as part of his rough outing. Through two appearances this season, the righty has allowed five earned runs in just 2.2 innings of work. Farmer should ultimately settle in as one of the Tigers' more reliable relief options, but he's unlikely to have a ton of fantasy appeal in his role.

Tigers' Buck Farmer: Hit hard again Wednesday

Farmer allowed four runs on three hits and a walk while retiring just two batters in Wednesday's Grapefruit League game against the Phillies. He struck out one. Farmer allowed two home runs, and he now has a 30.86 ERA across 2.1 innings this spring. The righty is potentially in the mix to close, though he likely projects as more of a setup option. A sluggish performance in the Grapefruit League won't help him move up the bullpen pecking order.
