Tigers' Bryan Garcia: Heads to minors

The Tigers optioned Garcia to Triple-A Toledo on Monday. Garcia was one of four relievers cut from big-league camp Monday as the Tigers look to pare down their bullpen ahead of Opening Day. The demotion to the minors doesn't come as a major surprise after Garcia turned in a 7.55 ERA and 1.86 WHIP across 39.1 innings with the big club in 2021.

Tigers' Bryan Garcia: Scoops up third win

Garcia (3-2) pitched 1.1 scoreless innings of relief to earn the win Tuesday against the White Sox. He allowed one walk and struck out one. Coming off of a productive 2020 campaign in which he posted a 1.66 ERA across 21.2 innings, Garcia has struggled with a 7.50 ERA across 35.2 innings this year. It's been even more of a struggle lately, as the righty had allowed five runs (four earned) in 2.2 innings this month before Tuesday's more encouraging effort. Garcia doesn't miss a ton of bats, so his margin for error is fairly small. He should stick in a middle relief role for the Tigers over the final few weeks of the season.

Tigers' Bryan Garcia: Sent to Triple-A

Garcia was optioned to Triple-A Toledo after Tuesday's loss to the Rangers, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports. The right-hander surrendered a pair of solo homers during the eighth inning Tuesday, and he's given up 13 earned runs in his past five outings. Garcia was a decent bullpen piece through his first 25 appearances with a 4.21 ERA, but his recent struggles unsurprisingly led to a demotion.

Why Detroit Tigers demoted reliever Bryan Garcia to Triple-A Toledo

Detroit Tigers reliever Bryan Garcia was the team's closer when the 2020 season ended. Once manager AJ Hinch was hired, though, pre-defined roles were discarded. Instead, Hinch focuses on high-leverage situations, in which Gregory Soto, Michael Fulmer and Jose Cisnero have shined recently to help the bullpen to a 1.94 ERA since May 16.

Tigers' Bryan Garcia: Notches second save

Garcia worked around a walk to pitch a scoreless inning and record the save in Wednesday's win over the Astros. He struck out two. Garcia earned his second save of the season in as many chances, which leads the team, and he had to work for it. He entered the game with the bases loaded and no outs in the ninth inning following a poor showing from Jose Cisnero, but managed to only allow a single run as the Tigers escaped with the 6-4 win. Gregory Soto is the only other Detroit player with a save this season, and he was asked to navigate through the heart of the Houston order in the eighth. All three pitchers seem to be in the mix for saves at this point, but Garcia could earn more opportunities if he continues to excel in tough spots.
