Rockets 2021-22 season in review: Bruno Fernando

Bruno Fernando came to the Rockets seemingly as a throw-in piece in the trade that sent Daniel Theis back to Boston, and Dennis Schroder to Houston. Not much was expected of the 6’9” Angolan forward out of Maryland. For most of Bruno’s time in Houston, we could expect the expected, as not much happened. Bruno was glued to the end of the bench.

Rockets' Bruno Fernando: Double-doubles off bench

Fernando ended Wednesday's 121-118 loss to the Kings with 17 points (6-8 FG, 5-6 FT), 10 rebounds, two assists and one block over 22 minutes. Fernando is not known for filling out the stat sheet on a regular basis, so there's no question this was a surprise outing for the former Maryland standout. However, he has proven he can produce when given enough time. He has logged more than 20 minutes twice this season and he ended up with double-doubles in both contests.

Rockets' Bruno Fernando: Double-doubles off bench

Fernando finished with 16 points (8-8 FG), 11 rebounds and two blocks in 23 minutes during Friday's 113-100 loss to Dallas. Fernando truly came out of nowhere with this double-double, as he hadn't played more than nine minutes in any given game prior to this contest, and he recorded season-high marks across the board Friday. The fact that he was perfect from the field also stood out, but it wouldn't be realistic to expect these numbers from him on a regular basis. Even after this performance, Fernando is averaging a meager 2.0 points and 1.4 rebounds per game on the season.

Rockets' Bruno Fernando: Absent from injury report

Fernando (trade pending) isn't listed on the Rockets' injury report ahead of Monday's contest against the Jazz. Fernando and Dennis Schroder, who were both acquired via trade in exchange for Daniel Theis, are absent from the injury report, suggesting they will be available to make their Rockets debut Monday. Fernando will likely have a tough time cracking Houston's rotation, as Christian Wood and rookie Alperen Sengun are expected to handle the majority of minutes at center.

The Boston Celtics did some reshaping of their roster on Thursday afternoon before the NBA trade deadline. First, the team called up the San Antonio Spurs and turned Josh Richardson into Derrick White, giving the team the sort of backcourt option and creator that they could really use alongside Jaylen Brown, Marcus Smart, and Jayson Tatum.

Rockets' Bruno Fernando: Traded to Rockets

Fernando was traded to the Rockets from the Celtics on Thursday, along with Dennis Schroder and Enes Freedom, in exchange for Daniel Theis, Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN reports. Fernando amounts to a throw-in in the deal, but the 2019 second-rounder should get a fresh start in Houston, where he could see a slightly larger role on a rebuilding club. Still, there's very little fantasy upside with Fernando, so he can be ignored in nearly all formats.
