The new HBO series connects heartfelt revelations to the imperfect, messy realities of everyday life. As “Somebody Somewhere” opens, viewers gaze upon smooth swaying cornfields and American flags. A family diner sits idly next to an antique sign. The rolling hills feel quietly provincial, similar to what one would see in an old folk painting. “MANHATTAN” is written on a water tower in the distance, yet this isn’t Manhattan, New York. Toto, we’re still in Kansas — Manhattan, Kansas.

Bridget Everett first started turning heads and dropping jaws in New York City around the turn of the century, when she would commandeer a Manhattan pub’s karaoke night, standing barefoot on the bar and belting out classics like “Piece of My Heart.” These over-the-top performances led to her finding cult fame as a star of the downtown alt-cabaret scene, where her joyously raunchy shows usually ended with her motorboating audience members and hosing them down with booze.

She was going nowhere in smalltown Kansas – until she unleashed her voice and became a raucous, liquor-swilling cabaret colossus. Now she’s the star of a hard-rocking, emotionally charged HBO drama

“We’re all doing the best we can,” says Bridget Everett. A mantra of many, especially throughout the past two years, but particularly relevant for the cabaret singer/comedian/actress’ HBO comedy Somebody Somewhere. The series follows Kansan Sam (Everett, who was born in Manhattan, Kansas), who returns to her hometown and struggles to fit in while grappling with loss and acceptance.

Like most people who are familiar with Bridget Everett, my introduction came by way of her musical numbers of Comedy Central's "Inside Amy Schumer." In those clips this force of curves and bawdy confidence regaled her audience with a few of her cabaret show's top bangers, including "What I Gotta Do" and "Eat It, Eat It."
