How Brenda Frese and Maryland turned pain into progress

Maryland Coach Brenda Frese is laughing at a question. Or maybe she's laughing at the memories that it brings up. She's on the phone in Spokane, Wash., Wednesday afternoon, taking a break after her No. 4-seeded Terrapins practiced in preparation for their Sweet 16 matchup against Stanford, the defending national champion. It's the same round in which her 2020-21 team - with its dynamic offense, Big Ten championship and all the expectations that come with being a top 10 team - fell to a lower-seeded opponent.
