Rangers release OF Jake Marisnick, RHP Brandon Workman

The Rangers announced Tuesday that outfielder Jake Marisnick and righty Brandon Workman have been released from their minor league contracts. It’s not clear whether either exercised an out clause in their contract, but it’s common this time of year for veterans of this nature to trigger such provisions in their non-roster contracts if they’ve been informed they won’t make the team. Regardless, both veterans will now be free to seek a new opportunity with another club.

Brandon Workman: Released by Rangers

Workman was released by the Rangers on Tuesday. Workman joined the team as a non-roster invitee but failed to win a roster spot. As a 32-year-old with a 5.66 ERA over the last two seasons, he's unlikely to find any major-league offers on the open market.

Rangers' Brandon Workman: Misses out on Opening Day roster

The Rangers reassigned Workman to minor-league camp Monday. Though he's only three years removed from saving 16 games and posting a 1.88 ERA in 71.2 innings with the Red Sox, Workman's career appears to be headed on a downward spiral. Now with his fourth organization since that career-best 2019 season, Workman was forced to settle for a minor-league deal over the winter and didn't distinguish himself in spring training to make a case for a spot in the Rangers' Opening Day bullpen. He'll likely begin the season in the bullpen at Triple-A Round Rock.

Red Sox designate veteran reliever Brandon Workman for assignment

Workman, who turns 33 next month, sees his second stint with the Red Sox come to a potential end in rather disappointing fashion. After signing a one-year, $1 million deal with the Cubs in February, Workman opened the 2021 season in Chicago’s bullpen, but got off to a dreadful start in which he posted a 6.75 ERA and 6.28 FIP over 10 relief appearances spanning eight innings of work before being designated for assignment in late April.

Red Sox's Brandon Workman: Designated for assignment

Workman was designated for assignment Thursday, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports. Workman has pitched for both the Cubs and Red Sox this season but has struggled to a 5.46 ERA across 28 innings. The move created roster space for the addition of Kyle Schwarber (hamstring), who was acquired by the Red Sox prior to the trade deadline.

Red Sox's Brandon Workman: Allows run but snares win

Workman (1-2) gave up a run on two hits and a walk in one inning, but he earned the win Sunday versus the Yankees. Workman became the pitcher of record when the Red Sox posted a five-run rally in the bottom of the eighth, and Matt Barnes was able to convert the save. The 32-year-old Workman has amassed a 4.68 ERA, 2.00 WHIP and 23:21 K:BB across 25 innings between the Red Sox and the Cubs this season. He's added four holds, but he hasn't seen a lot of high-leverage work.

Red Sox select veteran reliever Brandon Workman

The Red Sox are selecting the contract of right-hander Brandon Workman, manager Alex Cora announced to reporters Thursday morning. Righty Colten Brewer is being optioned to Triple-A Worcester in a corresponding 26-man roster move. A 40-man roster move will be announced later as well. Workman, who signed a minor league deal to return to the Sox after being cut loose by the Cubs, triggered a June 1 opt-out clause in his deal earlier this week. That gave the Sox 48 hours to either release him or add him to the big league roster, and they chose the latter.

Red Sox's Brandon Workman: Makes debut

Workman allowed one run on one hit and struck out two in the ninth inning during Thursday's 5-1 win over the Astros. Workman served up Yuli Gurriel's ninth-inning home run while making his season debut for Boston. He was set to exercise an opt-out clause in his contract, but the Red Sox purchased Workman's contract and placed him on the active roster. The 32-year-old Workman, who began his career in Boston, was once a key member of the Red Sox's bullpen. The Red Sox could use an additional consistent arm for late-inning work, but Workman is expected to serve in low-leverage roles for now, as he did Thursday.

Chicago Cubs Release Brandon Workman

When you take as many buy-low, bounce-back, flyer chances as the Chicago Cubs do in their bullpen, you know that a lot of them will not work out. Cubs' Brandon Workman: Suffers second loss Monday

Workman (0-2) allowed three runs on two hits and a walk across an inning of work to take the loss Monday against Atlanta. Workman got the fifth inning in a 5-5 game and promptly put two runners on, then allowed a three-run home to Freddie Freeman. Workman has 10 strikeouts across 7.1 innings this season, but he's also allowed two home runs and five earned runs already. With Craig Kimbrel pitching well in the closer's role, Workman should stick in middle relief, which limits his fantasy appeal.
