Cubs Place Seiya Suzuki on IL, DFA Robert Gsellman, Recall Brandon Hughes

The Cubs made some roster moves Monday aimed at helping out their pitching staff in the midst of a very busy stretch of games. Seiya Suzuki has been placed on the IL retroactive to May 27 with sprained left ring finger and lefty reliever Brandon Hughes has been recalled from Triple-A Iowa. In order to make room for Hughes on the 40-man roster, multi-inning reliever Robert Gsellman has been designated for assignment.

Cubs' Brandon Hughes: Back in big leagues

Hughes' contract was selected by the Cubs on Monday, Andy Martinez of Marquee Sports Network reports. Hughes spent 11 days on the roster as a replacement player while the Cubs had players on the COVID-19 injured list, but he was removed from the roster Saturday. He's back again just two days later as a regular member of the roster, and the spot seems deserved given that he recorded a 2.57 ERA, 0.71 WHIP and 9:1 K:BB in his seven innings of work earlier in the month.

Cubs Roster Update: Clint Frazier Activated, Michael Hermosillo to IL, Brandon Hughes Back to I-Cubs

The Cubs active roster has been a real-life merry-go-round that’s been a little hard to keep track of. A lot going on with injuries, COVID, DFAs, promotions, and the like. Today, Michael Hermosillo has been removed from the non-designated IL (COVID) and is now right back on the 10-day IL with his prior quad injury. Brandon Hughes, who was never on the 40-man due to replacing a non-designated IL player, is being sent back to Iowa. And we may not see Hughes back up anytime soon since he remains off the 40-man.

A Record-Setting Debut for Relief Prospect Brandon Hughes, Who Could Force His Way Into the Roster Crunch

I wouldn’t say Brandon Hughes was flying entirely under the radar until last night. The prospect nerds among us had been pointing out for a while that he had the best relief results of anyone in the upper minors this year, and it was a trend that actually went back almost a full year. We also knew, since he was Rule 5 eligible after the season, it was highly likely that he would come up to the big leagues at some point this season.
