NBA unveils redesigned Larry O'Brien, Bill Russell trophies, announces new conference finals MVP awards

The NBA has awarded the same championship trophy since 1975. Originally named after Boston Celtics founder Walter A. Brown, the golden basketball and net was renamed for former NBA commissioner Larry O'Brien in 1984 and has remained unchanged for nearly four decades. But on Thursday, the NBA unveiled a newly redesigned version of the O'Brien trophy that it will use moving forward. The changes are subtle, but include the following:

Bill Russell jersey sells for over $1 million, among other items at recent auction

As announced two weeks ago, a series of items of an exclusive collection from basketball legend Bill Russell went up for auction last Friday. The big-ticket item was Russell’s game jersey from the era of the 1950s-1960s, which sold for a grand total of $1,022,250. Other major sales included Russell’s sweater from the 1960s that went for $94,000. Additionally, a 1986 NBA championship ring belonging to Red Auerbach sold for $129,250.

Rare Bill Russell, Celtics memorabilia to go up for auction this month

Celtics fans and collectors have the chance to take home some historic pieces of memorabilia during an event with Hunt Auctions on April 22. In celebration of Bill Russell’s impact on both basketball and civil rights in the United States, a Russell jersey and warm-up jacket will each be up for auction, per a press release for the event. The jersey is expected to sell for $400,000-$600,000, while the jacket will be in the range of $50,000-$100,000.
