In one sense, the High Court’s dismissal of damages claims brought by eight of sexual predator Barry Bennell’s victims was just one more of the legal victories Manchester City have achieved in their Abu Dhabi era; secured because they are an extraordinarily effective and sophisticated club, who will argue their case to the end of the earth. But in another very material sense it is has been a court case to haunt them, because of the very singular question it had raised. What on earth possessed them to challenge the case brought by men whose courageous testimony had put Bennell behind bars, by confronting them with that same malevolent predator in court?
