Coyotes Need to See Much More From Barrett Hayton This Season

The 2018 NHL Draft was one of the biggest for the Arizona Coyotes, as they had the third-best odds for the first overall selection. Unfortunately, they ended up dropping back two spots to the fifth selection due to bad luck in the lottery. Despite that, they still had plenty of good options and eventually took center Barrett Hayton. A curveball to most, but the Coyotes desperately needed a center, as he dominated the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) playing mostly second-line minutes behind teammate Morgan Frost.

Coyotes' Barrett Hayton: Makes strides in first full year

Hayton scored 10 goals and added 14 assists in 60 contests this season. Hayton missed time after undergoing hand surgery in January. Prior to the injury, he logged just six points in 26 outings before stepping up with 18 points in his last 34 contests. The 21-year-old should be a top-six option heading into 2022-23 -- he often played on the second line and saw some first-line action as injuries piled up late in the year. The fifth overall pick from 2018 should still be in the plans for fantasy managers in dynasty, and he could be worth a look in deeper redraft formats next year as well.

The 21-year-old is up to 21 points, 79 shots, 81 hits, 20 PIM and a minus-8 rating in 58 outings overall.

Coyotes' Barrett Hayton: Career-best three helpers in win

Hayton dished out three assists in Tuesday's 9-2 win over Detroit. This performance doesn't hold a candle to Nick Schmaltz's seven-point outburst Saturday or even Schmaltz's two goals and two assists in this one, but it was still a career night for Hayton, who came into this game with 17 points in 67 career NHL games. The 2018 fifth-overall pick set a new single-game career high in points, and with Arizona having scored 17 goals in its last two games, Hayton could hold some short-term value while the Coyotes offense is cooking.

Coyotes' Barrett Hayton: Showing signs of progress

Hayton had a goal and an assist in Sunday's 5-3 loss to the Jets. Hayton mustered just his second multi-point performance of 2021-22. Being stuck on the offensively challenged Coyotes surely hasn't helped the 21-year-old center's development, but Hayton hasn't produced much in the NHL nor the AHL since being selected fifth overall in 2018. He's finally creating some reasons for optimism, though, having contributed two goals and two assists in his last five games since returning from a hand injury.
