Author & Punisher: How TOOL-Approved Industrial-Metal Mad Scientist Found Hope Amid Doom

Get Author & Punisher's new album, Krüller, on limited-edition colored vinyl at Revolver's shop. Tristan Shone is a sound scientist like no other. He creates and performs under the ominous name Author & Punisher, building sounds that travel through industrial, doom and alternative metal, but his concerns aren't strictly limited to what can be heard. He also needs to feel the crushing force of the music in his hands, body and throat.

(This is Wil Cifer‘s review of the new album by California-based Author & Punisher, which is being released by Relapse Records today.) It would have been easy for Tristan Shone to have just coasted for the rest of his career by being known as the dude who makes music with these machines he built. His early work consisted of very aggressive and dense slabs of industrial steamrolling that droned you into submission.

Author & Punisher: Hear Tool-Approved Industrial-Doom Act's Stirring New Song

Author & Punisher — the man-machine project of musician and mechanical engineer Tristan Shone — have been signed by Pantera's Philip Anselmo to his Housecore Records label and handpicked by Tool to tour with them. The prog-metal titans' Danny Carey and Justin Chancellor are clearly diehard fans as the pair make a guest-appearance on Author & Punisher's upcoming album, Krüller, due out on February 11th through Relapse Records. For those who are unfamiliar with the project, Shone makes much of Author & Punisher's industrial doom on handmade mechanical instruments, and for Krüller, he's upgraded his setup to fine effect — at least judging from lead single "Drone Carrying Dread." The gripping dirge artfully balances rumbling heaviness with stirring melodic singing. Author & Punisher to Release Feb. 11; New Single Posted

San Diego industrial doom innovator Author & Punisher will release the new album, Krüller, on Feb. 11 through Relapse Records. The solo outfit of Tristan Shone joins a crowded early-2022 sphere of outings, and he arrives with new machinations and new collaborations, as you can see detailed below. For those who would consume or otherwise be consumed by the follow-up to Author & Punisher‘s 2018 album, Beastland (discussed here), the new single “Drone Carrying Dread” brings an eight-minute introduction to the scope of Krüller, answering questions as to what depths Shone might conjure on the new release as well as the band’s overarching sonic progression and ongoing interplay between melodic resonance and rhythmic impact. A lot has happened in the world since 2018, and Beastland was a soundtrack for its time. Krüller‘s announcement brings immediately high expectations.
