Veterans' Champions: Audrey Smith and Jay Wainscott

Jay Wainscott is the director of the Dayton Vet Center and his colleague Audrey Smith is a Readjustment Counselor at the center. Together, they help veterans and their families cope with the trauma that often comes with military service. Scott and Smith have different professional backgrounds but helping veterans get back into life after serving is a passion they share.

Audrey Smith Brownfield, of Smithfield, passed away in her home, with her family by her side, Wednesday, October 6, 2021. She was born January 28, 1936, in Gilmore. Preceding her in death were her parents, Raymond Smith Jr. and Macel Lee Crites Smith; sister, Orie Ruth Ford; brothers, Raymond Douglas Smith, Willard Smith and Morgan Smith; her husband, James E. Brownfield; two daughters, Donna Marie Brownfield and Renya Joy Lutz.

Had 22 goals and 16 assists to help Bulldogs win the first state championship in program history. Scored three times and added an assist in 5-2 victory against Grain Valley in the Class 3 state title tilt. Scored both goals of 2-1 victory against Liberty in district final and had game-winning goal in 2-1 state semifinal win over Union.
